When you think of the Antebellum South with sugar cane fields and large homes with wrap around columns, Oak Alley is usually the home that comes to mind.
After a half-hour drive from downtown New Orleans, you’ll turn off of the interstate onto sleepy southern roads. Another 30 minutes will bring you to Oak Alley and it’s restaurants, exhibits, guided tours, and beautiful oak trees. Just before the civil war, this home was built by one of the wealthiest men in all of the south. Historians believe this home wasn’t the first. The large oak trees were planted in beautiful lines and grew long before the 19th century home was built.
There’s a restaurant, gift shop and even cottages you can rent to stay overnight.
Make sure you walk up onto the Levee to see the mighty Mississippi river itself.
