Five companies of Mormon (LDS Christian) men volunteered for service in the US Military just as the war began with Mexico.  They were accompanied by about 30 women and 50 children.  They marched over 2,000 miles to San Diego and were pivotal in the organisation of the newly US cities of San Diego, San Francisco as well as The Gold Rush.  This museum is dedicated to telling their story.

The free museum is located about a block from the center of Old Town.  The museum is a beautiful work of art inside and out.  My kids felt like they were watching a presentation from “Disney” because of the Harry Potter-like picture frames, scenes, and audience interaction.  They dressed me up in 1800’s military attire and  the kids  even got to pan for gold. It’s a great break from the sun, they have restrooms, and we walked away knowing a bit more history about this less-known group.
