USS Midway Museum
Address: 910 N Harbor Dr, San Diego, CA 92101
Don’t make the same mistake we did…. give yourselves plenty of time to experience this one of a kind museum. The USS Midway museum is incredibly kid-friendly. As part of your admission, you are issued an earphone headset. Each plane and room throughout the self-guided tour (yes, you can take guided tours) has a number. Enter the number on your headset and the audio tour comes to life. There are two different audio tours, one for kids and another for adults. Both include dramatizations and interviews of past crew members. The BEST part of the museum are the many real-life volunteers, many of which served aboard the Midway or a similar carrier. They walk around with yellow hats and fill in the few gaps the audio tour leaves off. You can ask questions or attend a class. You can roam around most of the ship on your own. However, the bridge area requires a tour. I recommend getting in line early… regardless, the line progresses well.
If you have a hard time walking or trip easily, you might want to consider taking extra time on the Midway. There are plenty of things to trip on. Each doorway requires a large step. Parking is difficult. We made the mistake of parking in a metered spot. Every hour or so we had to send a runner back to feed the meter. Take the time to stake out a better spot.
